Freaks photo gallery

This gallery features still photos from Freaks in order of their appearance in the film.  At the bottom of the page you will find rare promotional and production photos from the film.

Cleo flirtatiously drops her cape,

and Hans picks it up and drapes it about her.

In this outtake, Cleo tries her stuff on Phroso the clown, and gets no response (see Freaks script synopsis for more information).

The next day, the freaks play on Monsieur Duval's estate.

Roscoe in drag, having a spat with Hercules about their performance.  The script synopsis reveals that act featured Hercules rescuing "Roman Lady" Roscoe from a wild bull.

After finishing her act, Cleo thanks Hans for the beautiful flowers that he sent her.

Cleo then awards Hans with a kiss for advancing her 1,000 francs.

Cleo coaxes Hercules into her wagon.

"Prosit!"

Later, the two are sprawled on Cleo's bed after she has tricked Hans.

They just can't get enough of each other, can they?

The Stork Woman tells Phroso that the Bearded Lady's baby has been born,

and they run to see the new baby.

Champagne "for the most beautiful woman in all the world."

Violet accepts a marriage proposal, and Siamese twin Daisy, shall we say, feels the excitement of the moment.

Roscoe and Phroso see Hans leaving Cleo's wagon and bidding her goodnight; Roscoe stutters, "Cleo's gone on a dddd-diet!"

The wedding fest for Cleo and Hans opens with The Bird Girl dancing on the table.

Cleo: "I'm so happy, I could even kiss you, you big homely brute!"  And she does it!

"One of us!  One of us!
Gooble gobble!  Gooble gobble!"

"What are you? A man, or a baby?"

Cleo and Hercules top off their humiliation of Hans by taking the "little green-eyed monster" for a horsey back ride.

After the wedding feast, the two try to convince him that they were just joking,

after which he passes out.

The doctor declares Hans' illness to be caused by poison.

Cleo feeds Hans some poisoned medicine, but the freaks are watching. Finally the freaks catch Cleo
in the act of poisoning Hans,

and turn her into one of them.

Publicity Stills

A still based on an incident in Todd Robbins' short story "Spurs".

The bizarre love triangle.

Production Stills

Tod Browning poses with the freaks.  Browning's love for these "unlovable" people is quite obvious here.

The original caption attached to the back of this photo reads: "REHEARSING THE FEAST.  Tod Browning rehearsing the fantastic wedding feast of the freaks, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's sensational sideshow mystery drama 'Freaks'."

The filming of the panning shot at the wedding feast.  Tod Browning can be seen at the far right.

Baclanova in the MGM commissary, probably during the filming of Freaks, judging by the styling of her hair.
